Susan has a first degree in science education and a masters in special education, plus over thirty years experience working in and with public schools.

Apart from several years directing an alternative high school in Newark, New Jersey, her work has been centered in New York City, beginning with teaching in a middle school in Harlem.

In 1990, Ms. Winston founded her own school, the nationally recognized and award winning, School for Writing and Publishing (SWAP).

She then went on to spearhead the effort for new schools in Community School District 1, assisting the start up of five new schools in the East Village and Lower Eastside of New York City.

In 1994, Susan was honoured by the Reader's Digest as one of its 'Heroes in American Education' and the same year received the General Electric / Walter B. Wriston Award for Educational Innovation.

Susan then moved on to become President of the KIPP network of schools, where she was responsible for the training and support of school leaders in high performing schools across the nation.

Susan now focuses her attention on the training and support of school and department leaders of the KIPP New York City schools and the design for expansion of this network.
